Remember and Celebrate
"In Remembrance of Me"

Do you remember when ... ?

Who comes to you mind when you hear that question?

Memorial Day is a powerful time to remember, celebrate, and inspire. Remember Jesus' words to his followers: "Do this in remembrance of me." Many churches have those words engraved on an altar or communion table at the center of their worship space.

With that command, Jesus tells us to do much more than just recall a brief memory of a person or event. The word actually means "to make a past experience a present reality."

When we take communion and follow Jesus' instructions to "Do this in remembrance of me," we bring the effect of Jesus' death and resurrection into our present reality. We trust that through our remembrance, we re-enact Jesus sitting with us. We see him break the bread, a sign of his body being sacrificed for the forgiveness of our sins. We celebrate the victory that Jesus won and he gives the same victory to us because he has risen from the grave. To remember is to celebrate.

As we remember our loved ones this weekend, we celebrate their lives and the sacrifice they made so that we can live in freedom. Though grief may bring sadness and tears, we celebrate their lives and we rejoice again.

By our trust in Jesus, we experience forgiveness, new life, and the hope of everlasting life. Remember that and let's celebrate!

Pray with me: Dear Jesus, Bring back to us memories of loved ones so that we may experience the good times with them again. To those for whom grief is fresh and harsh, we ask you to give peace, comfort, and courage to trust themselves to you and your care. Come and be a real presence in our lives today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
