Who Changed the Game Plan?
Can You Persevere?

Ryan liked his half-day kindergarten program, so he was eager to start first grade. Then a hard reality kicked in.

Ryan enjoyed the morning of his first day of first grade. He began to get his things ready to go home, as he was accustomed in kindergarten. Linda, his kind teacher asked, “Ryan, what are you doing?”

“I’m going home,” he said calmly.

Linda assured him he would get to go home, but they were heading to the lunchroom first. Then they’d come back to the classroom for some more work and activities before going home.

With a look of disbelief, Ryan planted his hands on his hips and demanded, “Who on earth signed me up for this?”

Life is like that. Many times I stand in disbelief about life and this world and ask the same question. I’m sure you have many days like that, too.

Jesus calls us to follow him. He even told us that we would experience difficulty. We must persevere through illness, disappointment, grief, and changes in jobs and relationships. Change comes at every age and stage of life, and we must persevere still to follow Christ through them all.

When you notice that someone or something has changed the plan you expected to follow, turn to Jesus, who perseveres for us, and rely upon the Holy Spirit to give you purpose, strength, and wisdom to endure.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. (Romans 5:3-5, New Living Translation)

May Christ's peace strengthen you to persevere today!
