My great grandfather, a Michigan farmer in the 1880’s, was attacked by an ox one day. Every time the ox charged and struck him, my great-grandfather heard words spoken. 

He heard God say, “Preach!” When the ox struck again, he heard it again, “Preach!” Finally, on the third attack, great-grandpa Beane, relented and said, “Okay! I will preach!” Then the bull stopped attacking him.

That’s a phenomenal story told by my grandmother, his daughter. Grandpa Beane became a Methodist evangelist after that. Then the family moved to New York state where he served as pastor of Methodist churches until he died in 1943.

God calls us to tell others of Jesus, and sometimes (if not often) fulfilling that call involves pain and suffering. The Holy Spirit inspired, strengthened, equipped, and guided Paul and Silas to travel to many towns telling others about God’s love and forgiveness through Jesus, who is the One who saves us from our sin. Along the way, they suffered angry crowds, imprisonment, and event beatings.

We can certainly tell others of the freedom Jesus gives us. We can share the hope of eternal life. We can tell others about living a life without guilt for all the wrong we’ve done to others and God. We can live with purpose knowing that our life makes a difference to many others. We have good news to tell.



So let’s tell them.

• Pray for opportunities to speak to others about Jesus.
• Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you the right words at the right time.
• Then follow the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Dear Jesus, before you motivate me with a big ox, please send your Holy Spirit to inspire, instruct, and guide me. Move me by your Holy Spirit to share your truth with others so that they may also know your love and everlasting life. In Jesus' name, let it be so!
