Cornelius certainly had big shoulders to carry the responsibility he had. A trained, skilled, and honored soldier, he commanded an Italian regiment for Caesar. He also worshiped God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He gave generously to the poor, prayed regularly, and was well respected. So why was he so scared? An angel appeared at his door.

I imagine an angel that frightens a Roman soldier must look big, strong, fierce, and intimidating. The Bible says “Cornelius stared at him in terror. ‘What is it, sir?’ he asked the angel.” (Acts 10:4) In this simple story, we see a man of authority acknowledge God’s greater authority. We can learn from that.

When we worship together, we acknowledge God’s authority in this world. We submit ourselves to God’s love, mercy, and righteousness. God is not a malevolent dictator seeking to destroy us. The opposite is true. God sent Jesus to bring life, not destroy it.

“The thief’s purpose is to destroy and kill. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life,” Jesus says in John 10:10.

Reflect on this question: In what way did God "show up at your door" today? Will you submit to his authority and follow his ways? Do you slam the door in God's face and reject his presence? How do you respond?
